NCCK calls for resignation of President and PM

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has called for the resignation of President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga in case they cannot implement the constitution as it is. This was due to the recent decision by the Cabinet to push for amendments to the Constitution. They asked MPs not to be used to mutilate the constitution.

NCCK went ahead to rebuke the country’s political leadership in the wake of the many obscurities that have rampaged through the country. In a news conference at Jumuia Conference in Limuru town on 21st September, the leaders also criticized the government for its failure to execute its duties.

The Executive Committee attributes the high cost of living that is beyond the reach of many Kenyans, tragedies which include fire accidents, road accidents and consumption of illicit brews that have claimed the lives of many Kenyans to the poor leadership that the country has been subjected to. The NCCK stated that this was as a result of failure of the administrative, law enforcement and political authorities to fulfill their mandate and responsibilities.

The council’s main concern was the difficult times and the economic depreciation currently facing Kenya. NCCK challenged the state officials to steer away from succession politics and restore sanity into the various government sectors. These included the continuing road carnage in particular which has thrived at the onset of corruption in the traffic police department.

NCCK was however keen to note that the Sinai fire disaster, the road carnage and the deaths from illicit brews were a big sore on the psyche and dignity of the nation, but that the failure of the leadership was not an excuse for Kenyans to break the law or engage in dangerous activities, that undermine the welfare of the nation. Hence Kenyans were challenged to take their leaders to account to give them more concrete action on how they are dealing with the issues facing Kenyans and the reasons why they are currently unable to resolve them.

The church leaders went ahead to urged voters to vote wisely for a new crop of leaders in the next general election.
